CARRIE G. STEVENS

(1882 to 1970)

Following is a collection of original Carrie Stevens' flies that reside in my North American collection. Carrie Stevens applied her tying skill from her home in Upper Dam Maine in the Rangelay Lakes Region. She was the wife of a Maine fishing guide and claimed that she never used a vise nor had any tying instruction.

The Gray Ghost is her most famous creation. The fly's notoriety was given birth after as she caught a 6 lb. 13oz. brook trout that took 2nd place in the 1924 Field & Stream fishing contest. While her geography is worlds away from the Rocky Mountains, a finer tyer and historical figure in the development of trout streamers in America is not to be found. Virtually all of the flies listed below have the original packaging and the accompanying tags with Carrie Stevens' own handwriting as noted in some of the photographs
